What is self-care?
Self-care refers to the intentional and proactive practice of taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves making choices and engaging in activities that promote self-nurturing, relaxation, and personal growth. Self-care is a way of prioritizing yourself, recognizing that your needs and well-being are essential components of a healthy and balanced life.
In some people’s heads, there might live an idea, that self-care is selfish. But it has been proven that self-care can lower the stress in your life while elevating your mood, your energy levels, and your physical health. How can you give anything to anyone if you are drained, tired, and emotionally out of balance? Self-care is the charger that you need to be able to fully participate in your life and your loved ones as well.
Different dimensions of Self-Care
To be able to create a comprehensive self-care routine, that works for you, you need to understand and cultivate all levels of self-care practices.
Physical Self-Care:
Physical self-care is all about your body. These practices help you maintain and improve your physical health. It includes activities such as exercise, nutritious eating, getting enough sleep, and attending to medical needs. Taking care of your physical health can enhance energy levels, reduce stress, and promote overall vitality. But we can also include practices in this category that are meant to make you feel better in your body. These practices can be getting a haircut, creating a skincare routine, or getting a massage.

It includes practices such as expressing your emotions in healthy ways, engaging in therapy or counseling, practicing mindfulness and meditation, journaling, engaging in hobbies or activities that bring you joy, and surrounding yourself with positive and supportive relationships.

This category emphasizes activities that support and enhance your cognitive well-being. It includes practices such as engaging in stimulating mental activities like puzzles or reading, learning new skills, engaging in creative outlets, setting boundaries to manage stress, and practicing relaxation techniques.
Social Self-Care:
Social self-care focuses on nurturing your relationships and social connections. It involves spending time with your loved ones, cultivating supportive friendships, engaging in social activities that bring joy, seeking social support when you need it, and setting healthy boundaries in your relationships.
Spiritual Self-Care:
Spiritual self-care encompasses practices that nurture your spiritual or existential well-being. It can involve engaging in religious or spiritual practices, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness or meditation, exploring your personal beliefs and values, and engaging in activities that bring a sense of purpose or meaning.
Practical Self-Care:
Practical self-care involves taking care of the practical aspects of your life to reduce stress and enhance well-being. This includes activities like organizing and decluttering your living space, managing your finances, setting goals and planning, and developing healthy routines and habits.
Professional Self-Care:
Professional self-care focuses on maintaining a healthy work-life balance and nurturing your well-being in your workplace. It includes practices such as setting boundaries between work and personal life, taking breaks, seeking professional development opportunities, cultivating good relationships with co-workers, and practicing stress management techniques at work.
Astrology and self-care
Astrology, an ancient tool that has guided humanity for thousands of years, offers profound insights into life and the human personality. By observing the movements and energies of celestial bodies, we can gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and within ourselves. The analysis of zodiac signs provides valuable knowledge about our nature, energy dynamics, and fundamental needs.
Through astrology, you can unlock a gateway to self-discovery and with that, self-care. But first, you need to understand some astrology basics.
Your big 3
Understanding your Sun sign might be a great starting point to cultivate a personalized self-care practice. But the truth is, you are not just your Sun sign. To create a more comprehensive self-care routine, it’s important to consider at least your Moon sign and your Ascendant as well.
Your Sun sign can give you an insight into what makes you energized. What makes you reconnect with yourself. It’s your vitality and life force, so your Sun sign is your most important factor to consider when it comes to your overall well-being
Your Moon sign influences your emotional needs. It can show you what you need to find emotional and spiritual fulfillment.
Finally, your Ascendant sign is about how you approach life. It’s important to understand because we use this energy to reach our goals. It’s our practical approach to life. If our Sun sign is about WHO we are becoming, then the Ascendant sign is about HOW we get there.
If you don’t know your big 3, you can calculate your birth chart details here.
Polarities and elements
Now that you know your big 3, it’s time to understand your zodiac signs by their nature and their expression. First of all, we can group them into two major categories, by their polarities. Then we can understand them by their element, which paints us a more detailed picture of their nature and their preferences.
Extroverted signs
Six of the twelve zodiac signs are more extroverted, active, and outward in their expressions. We call them masculine or yang signs. These are the fire signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. And the air signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
- Fire signs are associated with passion, creativity, enthusiasm, and impulsivity. They tend to be active, confident, and energetic. Their energy comes from their sense of self and their desires and ambitions. This energy charges them to initiate action, express and assert themselves, and explore life’s possibilities.
- Air signs are associated with intellect, communication, curiosity, and adaptability. Air signs tend to be social, communicative, and open-minded. They are often interested in learning and exploring new ideas and perspectives.
Introverted signs
The other six signs are introverted, passive, and receiving in their nature. We call them feminine or yin signs. These are the earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. And the water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
- Earth signs are associated with stability, practicality, reliability, and groundedness. Earth signs tend to be down-to-earth, responsible, and hardworking. They are often focused on material possessions, security, and building a solid foundation.
- Water signs are associated with emotions, intuition, sensitivity, and creativity. Water signs tend to be intuitive, empathetic, and deeply connected to their feelings. They are often creative and imaginative, with a strong sense of empathy and compassion.
Understanding the polarities and elements of our zodiac signs is very important. They can give us insights into how we recharge. For example, the masculine signs (fire and air) recharge by going out and taking action, exploring, and socializing with people. They have a hard time sitting still and meditating into oblivion because they crave stimulation. On the other hand, feminine signs (earth and water) recharge by withdrawing and reconnecting with themselves, doing grounding activities, and resting. For them, getting too many impulses from the outside world can be overwhelming and tiring.
Note: You might be wondering: “I’m an Aries, why am I not extroverted?” It’s because your birth chart is complex, and all kinds of factors affect you. This is why it’s important to consider at least your Moon sign and Ascendant. They might be earth signs or water signs, and they would have a more introverted influence on you. This is also true the other way around. So please reflect on these questions and don’t just take the energies of your zodiac signs for granted.

- Do Yoga: Another way to keep you in the flow is by doing yoga asanas. It keeps your body and mind flexible.
- Breathing exercises: A great way to regulate your nervous system is through breathing exercises. One exercise can be inhaling for four seconds and exhaling for eight. The longer exhales signals your parasympathetic nervous system to calm you down. The other breathing exercise is the physiological breath. This is similar to sighing. You inhale once, and then a second time, followed by a long exhale. Watch this YouTube video for a presentation.
